The content itself was acceptable, considering it's battling the constant updates to software, and some of it is already out-of-date. When following through, you have to be aware that your installation of Fedora (the distro that it uses) may differ slightly from what's in the book. However, the most egregious thing I found was that there were several typos throughout the book, particularly within the end of chapter review questions and exercises (and I'm about half way through). These typos included the actual Linux commands themselves, and where a) it focuses heavily on the command-line interface and b) there's no easy way to check the answers to the review questions without further access to the Instructor Site (sold separately of course), it was frustrating to identify answers to questions and I had to further research on the 'net to find out whether I was wrong, or the book was. If anyone has the book and wants examples, check out Project 3-2, Step 9, or Chapter 5 review Questions, Question 20.It does rush through a few small things, while seemingly spending too much time on others, but it's difficult to find a technical book that balances this well. Overall it was ok, and it was required for my course, but in my opinion it's not worth the price and if I was self-studying and had a choice, i would have picked something else.

This book is in most ways excellent. The misspellings throughout the text including and most aggravatingly the terminal commands is inexcusable. Especially for a book of this price.

Update: Re-rented this book from RentU, and it was amazing. Book was in great quality and the required CD was included. Very happy with second rental. Would definately recommend renting from RentU.I waited until to open the package until the day before class started. The one from Cengage, the spine was horribly broken. I did receive the book, but the condition was beyond poor. Also, no CD was included. Would NOT recommend renting from Cengage as the book I received was in horrible condition.

There's good information in this textbook. However, it WILL fall apart at some point. I've never seen any book with such poor bindings.That said, again, the information within will serve one well in whatever class they need this for. Though Google + man pages are equally, if not more, educational.

The book came in good (new) condition, however, when trying to install Fedora and Ubuntu, the CD did not have the .iso files in them.

When I first got the book, it seemed to be in good condition. After about 2 1/2 weeks, the binding in chapter 6 suddenly fell apart.There were also a lot of typos and mistakes that make it frustrating for finishing the assignments for the class I needed this for.The author/publisher needs to update a lot for the next edition (use newer versions of Fedora and Ubuntu).Needed this for a class, so I only rented it, otherwise wouldn't bother with purchasing it.

Fair price. I still dislike that textbooks used for school are 5x more than a book that covers the same material but isn't used for College. As far as the actual content of the book, I would say it's very nice. It came with a DVD that has Fedora. I am using centOS7 however.

I got what I was looking for and it has what I needed for my class except the cd....

I'd previously read Bones in the Garden and enjoyed it, but this, THIS - the book was divided into two sections, "Darkness and "Light", and it was oh-so-perfect. Each poem is a fleeting glimpse into the worst kinds of trauma. And then into the glowing warmth of healing. The pieces about self harm particularly resonated with me. Let me not forget that there are also illustrations! And they will definitely add to your reading experience.I really appreciated that the author included not only a content warning in the beginning BUT ALSO a list of suicide/crisis hotline numbers in the back. (I don't personally benefit from content warnings because I'm jaded af, but I know there are a bajillion people who DO, so, bravo!)I'm absolutely looking forward to McKayla's next work!

i am the sun & moon of my own damn universethis poetry collection was divided into two parts, dark & light. i do admit that i didn't really enjoy the first part, but i loved the second part much more. mckayla wrote beautiful poems about healing, self-love, and learning to love yourself and your body (again).i also really appreciated both the trigger warning list at the beginning, and the suicide hotline/crisis line numbers at the end of the collection.

This was such a beautiful and effective poetry collection. What Mckayla does best is create a linear storyline for her collections that is focused and doesn’t meander into off-topic subjects. She really knows how to craft a story arc with her poetry. I also really appreciated the trigger warnings in the beginning and the hotlines at the end. It’s really clear that she cares about her readers and their mental health. Well done!

Another lovely collection of poetry from McKayla! I really enjoyed Bones in the Garden, but I feel like she has grown as a poet, which is so fun to watch! The whole thing was solid, but there were a handful of lines and poems in particular that were truly stunning. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has struggled with mental health issues, abuse, self harm, or suicidal thoughts. It reminded me that I am not alone. I really enjoyed the illustrations, too! Anyway, well done, McKayla.

The poems of anxiety and empowerment tugged at my heart. Thank you for putting anxiety into words. I love the imagery.

Semicolon was beautiful the first read through, and better the second. I'm grateful these words were shared with us. There is such a personal voice to each poem. I can't wait for more. This is a must read for anyone, and I would recommend to anyone~

This is well-written and provides a good overview of some of the concepts (benefits and high level methods) of defining your infrastructure in text files, but honestly I didn't get anything out of this book. I do security at a company where we use AWS and have one devops guy doing everything, so I decided to try to learn a little more about what he does. This book did not help me. I already knew that defining what servers you have in text files that can be checked into git is a good thing. I already knew that saving your configurations for how these servers should be set up is a good thing. I was hoping to learn more about best practices at a more technical level, but this book is too high level for that.

Infrastructure as Code shows modern techniques to use the cloud. The beginning chapters detailed the differences between the "Iron Age" of infrastructure and newer cloud based methods. Scripts are shown often to show how you would actually setup some cloud based instances. The author has a preference for Ruby and AWS.The middle portions of the book look at design patterns related to the cloud. Often "anti-patterns" are explored as well to show what not to do. I found the information to be too general here, and sometimes not that relevant to Infrastructure. To give an example, the author discusses Code Reviews where he says: "All too often, code reviewing becomes a wasteful activity that doesn't lead to improvements actually being made to code. Pair programming is more rigorous, with input from two people leading to better design and improvements made in real time."The author often states opinions like this, but does not back them up by anything but his opinion. There was no evidence provided to show that code reviews are wasteful, while pair programming boosts productivity. Maybe this has been the case for the author, but I would have liked to seen more evidence for a lot of his claims. A lot of the asides in the book were taken from the author's personal experiences and used to prove something.I found the stronger parts of the book where the author shows configurations and details. Parts in which the author relied on personal experiences and generalizations were not as good. Overall though, this was an informative book that is helping define the new rules for cloud based architectures.

I found this book to be very informative as I am trying to shift from manual operations experience into automated operations. Another thing that I really appreciated while reading this is I never saw the words "X subject matter is outside the scope of this book." Whenever a casual reference was made to a topic that wasn't intended to be discussed in detail, a footnote was provided that referred me to a more specfic text, video or blog site.

I am really disappointing with the book that I received. The cover page is damage and the content of the book is also damage. I purposely bought NEW book to avoid coffee stain and worn out. Unfortunately, I still didn't receive broken book with new price.

This book provides a nice overview of modern approach to build and run infrastructures. However, it is little to be gained from it for an experienced developer. Most things are common knowledge.Of course any reader would get something new from this book, but time can be better invested.

About the Author

William Cunningham is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Minnesota where he taught for 36 years in the Departments of Botany and Genetics and Cell Biology as well as the Conservation Biology Program, the Institute for Social, Economic, and Ecological Sustainability, the Center for Environmental Learning and Leadership, and the McArthur Program in Global Change. He received his Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Texas in 1963 and spent two years at Purdue University as a postdoctoral fellow. At various times, he has been a visiting scholar in Sweden, Norway, Indonesia, and China, as well as several universities and research institutions in the United States.Dr. Cunningham has devoted himself to education and teaching development at the undergraduate level in biology.  He began his educational career in structural biology but for the last 10-15 years has concentrated on environmental science, teaching courses such as Social Uses of Biology; Garbage, Government, and the Globe; Environmental Ethics; and Conservation History.  Within the past four years, he has received both of the two highest teaching honors that the University of Minnesota bestows  -- The Distinguished Teaching Award and a $15,000 Amoco Alumni Award.  He has served as a Faculty Mentor for younger faculty at the university, sharing the knowledge and teaching skills that he has gained during his distinguished career.

Was somewhat disappointed in this. It is my fault that I didn't notice it was paperback. I was looking for something along the lines of the Disneyland autograph books. Nice little hardback books. Each page also says autograph book a long the time and has page numbers on the bottom, not completely blank pages. I was hoping for something a little nicer looking. The cover is so cute. I did not end up using this for what I had planned on. I appreciate that they were nice about refunding my money though.

I like the book but it was too big to carry around to get autographs but it does give a lot pages. Great for adults but too big for kids but that's my personal opinion you might think differently

Looking forward to using this in the near future. The paper is thick and easy to write on without smearing.

From there the book deals largely with the question of how language works and how it can describe the world accurately. Many forms of language (e.g. names and propositions) reflect different objective parts of reality (e.g. objects and facts). Logic is then discussed as it pertains to tautologies, contradictions and propositions. From this claim stems the conclusion that that the laws of science are not logical “laws,” but a means that we use to express reality—hence, science does not in fact explain our world but merely describes it.Although the author embraces logic, he ironically ventures into the mystical on many occasions. Some of such highlights of Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus include the proposal that most philosophical propositions are senseless (4.003), the relativity of “free” will and the lack of inner necessity of causality (5.1362), and the inability to recognize either the truth or falsehood from non-logical propositions. Wittgenstein brilliantly elaborates on widely accepted, yet wholly non-certain, everyday happenings (6.363II to 6.372) and clarifies that all ethics is transcendental (6.42I). In effect, the author posits that morality is in fact objective because subjective morality stems from happenstance, and is therefore meaningless.All potential readers should be acutely aware that this book is a very, very tough read. You may find yourself taking several minutes to read through one short page and then several hours to digest what it is you in fact just read. Either way, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is a terse, powerful, enigmatic and notable in its ability to whisk the dormant imagination into shape. The intellectual ramifications of being able to fully grasp and comprehend the material are limitless.

Amazing read, and recommendable. Wittgenstein tried to spell out precisely what a logically constructed language can (and cannot) be used to say. Its seven basic propositions simply state that language, thought, and reality share a common structure, fully expressible in logical terms.On Wittgenstein's view, the world consists entirely of facts. (Tractatus 1.1) Human beings are aware of the facts by virtue of our mental representations or thoughts, which are most fruitfully understood as picturing the way things are. (Tractatus 2.1) These thoughts are, in turn, expressed in propostitions, whose form indicates the position of these facts within the nature of reality as a whole and whose content presents the truth-conditions under which they correspond to that reality. (Tractatus 4) Everything that is true—that is, all the facts that constitute the world—can in principle be expressed by atomic sentences. Imagine a comprehensive list of all the true sentences. They would picture all of the facts there are, and this would be an adequate representation of the world as a whole. Tractatus, however, not only provides a way to structure our knowledge about the world, but also provokes to develop a critical contradiction with a non-factual or emotioanl sphere of human nature.

I consider this book to be very worth reading because it is associated with an extremely important period in philosophy following the work of Frege, Russell and Whitehead. I found it to be very opaque. Wittgenstein seemed to be struggling with ideas he encountered while considering the work of Frege, Russell and Whitehead. The preface by Russell showed that he considered the work to be very significant. I intend to study more about this, and will probably revise this review later. For now, I would recommend reading the Tractatus, but I did not understand it very well.I think that a primary aim of Wittgenstein in the Tractatus was to address Russell's paradox and other problems of the "language" of logic, as being developed by Frege, Russell and Whitehead at that time. This led him into deep waters with respect to the mysteries of language, and a seeming necessity to set limits, even if these limits were somewhat arbitrary. Certainly some of his insights in this regard were highly penetrating. In particular, he viewed transgressing limits where truth could be adequately assessed as entering a realm of nonsense. I feel that had Gödel's work been available at the time, Wittgenstein might have thought somewhat differently about the limits he perceived. On the other hand, Wittgenstein ignored this work later in the more mature phases of his thinking. I came away from the Tractatus feeling that while it is still of great importance, especially as it was at a historical nexus in the evolution of logic, and displays some profound insights, time has somewhat passed it by.

This appears to be the product of a poor scan and OCR. There are multiple typos per page. Why does this matter more than usual? It's Wittgentein, and he was all about how ideas can and cannot be expressed in language. By introducing errors like this, it renders it almost unreadable.

This book has very good information, but like another customer commented, getting to the hikes is one of the primary uses for a book of this type. My biggest "complaint" is about the regional map inside the front cover of the book which shows where all 60 hikes are located. The map markings, hike locations, highway and road names, etc. read left to right on the page. Unfortunately the top of the page is not geographical NORTH as one is accustomed to seeing on most printed maps. The map has been printed and labeled showing east as the top of the map. If you turn the book so that NORTH is in the more familiar top postion of the map, then the markings, names, etc. are rotated 90 degrees clockwise and near to impossible to read. This is really a bummer, since it is the ONLY map in the book that shows the location of all 60 hikes on one individual map. I had (but lost) the earlier edition of this book years ago and referred to the regional map often, but don't remember the map being this difficult to read. It's hard to believe the author and an editor thought this map was at all logical and easy to understand!

Some of the hikes in this book are not so great, but I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. I was looking for more of the remote hikes and hidden gems you can't find on the internet. This book shows more of the state parks, state trails, and more popular places to hike. Since I already knew about most of the ones close to my house already, this book wasn't very useful for me. For someone who wants to find quick and interesting weekend hikes with higher traffic, this would be a good book.

The book was in like new condition. I can't wait to utilize it to the best of my ability. No excuse for sitting on the sofa with something like this in print. Probably the best book value ever..

Hikes sorted by length (less than 3 miles, 3-5 miles, 5-10 miles, over 10) and other criteria of interest. This is a great readable book for kids to explore hiking trails and for parents and adults to get an idea of what the hike entails. I can find hikes within a 10 minute drive or can explore new areas not far outside the Twin Cities. This is the kind of book I use for the "what should we do today? let's go for a hike!" level of planning I depend on when I get a free afternoon with the kids.I agree with the other reviewer that the driving directions aren't great - but that's what MapQuest and my GPS are for! The book also does not provide hiking boots or water - you'll need to supply those yourself as well.

I need guidebooks like this to do two things for me: 1) help me pick a hike and 2) get me there. Everything else is fluff for me. While "60 Hikes within 60 Miles..." delivers decent writing and a good layout (fluff) and has done an excellent job so far in helping me pick out hikes in the area, it has really failed in getting me to my selected destinations. If you want the grueling details (and maybe some tips if you've already purchased the book), then read on. Otherwise, bring a map.For example, Hike 42 tells you to simply take the "Monticello exit" off I-94, follow signs "to the left" and get on County Road 35. There are two Monticello exits, only one of which is clearly marked as the exit for CR-35. Unfortunately, this is the wrong exit. Only if you take the second Monticello exit do the directions make sense, but there is no way you would know this from the book.The directions for Hike 41 tell you to take the "93rd Street" exit off I-94 into Maple Grove. There is no "93rd Street" exit. Instead, you want to take the CR-30 exit (aka "Maple Grove Parkway"), which does happen to be 93rd Street, but you would not know this from the interstate unless you had a map other than rudimentary diagram provided in this book.Finally, Hike 22 tells you to get off I-94 at the "Rogers exit" and get onto CR-150. Unfortunately, at the end of the exit, your only choice is to get onto 101 or return to the interstate. You can use a bit of common sense and head left on 101, and, staying straight, eventually end up on CR-150, but anyone who wants to stick hard and fast to the directions given will be lost immediately upon exiting the freeway. Moreover, although the pictured map correctly showed CR-116 as the next turn, the directions themselves say to turn onto CR-166, a sloppy typo that does not make me believe these directions are going to get any better anytime soon.The directions for Hike 46 tell you to take a right off US-169 onto State 47 North. However, to get onto 47 North, you stay straight (no right turn), simply avoiding the left hand turn required to stay on 169. It is actually easier to make a right onto 47 South (NOT North) just before this, and then get off onto County 17 North at the next exit. The park entrance is directly off 17, and 17 also continues north to provide easier access to Hike 47 as well.I've only done six hikes so far, and the directions on five out of the six have been unsatisfactory. I hope they get better, but from now on I'm bringing a serious map.Other than these issues, I like the simple, clear layout, the lists of hikes sorted by length, terrain, etc. at the beginning of the book, the summaries of hikes in the gray boxes, and the astute commentary about the hikes through out the book. If it weren't for the horrendous directions, I would have given this book four or five stars, but for me a book like this must be able to get me where I'm going. So far, "60 Hikes within 60 Miles..." has not.

Great pics, like the original. I find the cadence a little less satisfying and it doesn't hold my daughter's attention quite as well. It's still a favorite in our bedtime rotation.

Warning: don't buy this book unless you're prepared to read it over and over again. My one year old loves books with real babies in it so this was an instant hit. He will ask me to read it multiple times in a row and has yet to get bored with it. The photos are vivid and the writing is simple but well-thought out. Overall, it was a great purchase!

I wish there was more of a story line. It’s just kind of about the pictures and the words are an after thought.

All the global babies books have been favorites in our house. Such sweet and simple books. Love them!

My baby loves looking at all of the sweet babies in this book!

My son is a big fan of the cute baby pictures. We read this book every night before bed. The entire Global Babies series is excellent.
