In order not to repeat myself, let me start out by saying this review is obviously my opinion. This book is advanced metaphysics poorly written. You would have to be pretty far along in your metaphysical research or an unprejudiced long time student of Christian Science or similar to get much out of these repetitive and arcane scribblings. That being said, I believe Quimby to have been a pioneering genius and a gift to his time, as well as ours through those who have stood on his shoulders and clarified his message. Unless these writings were a hoax as to when they were actually written, which seems doubtful, it seems pretty clear that Mary Baker Eddy gleaned much from Quimby and borrowed liberally from his writings, concepts and ideas. That is not to say she did not improve greatly, if not immeasurably, on his initial discoveries. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of metaphysics, and it may even add to or supplement one's own understanding. Just please tell me that it was not a hoax or hit piece on Christian Science. If not, then I believe Mrs. Eddy owed him a public acknowledgement at the very least. "Only the shadow knows."
P.P.Quimby is arguably the "father" of the American "New Thought" movement. He gave up on the horrific medical practices of the day (generally involving mercury, arsenic or opiates it seems), and proved time and again that the contents of the patient's belief system was more powerful than the diseases from which they were suffering. That said, it sounds as if lots of things that were presenting to doctors at the time might have been more "hysterical" than medicine sees today. Still, he is curing before the word psychosomatic was even coined, I think.Halfway through the book and I can say it is filled with testimonials of his efficacy but very few specifics about what he did for a particular patient or how their belief system was messed up. It's pretty clear that he was an exceptional clairvoyant, able to literally get inside someone's head and debug their belief system. Once the conflicting beliefs were corrected, health was restored, sometimes faster than others.I hope to update this if I find more meat in the second half of the book.
Quimby was a maverick in the discovery of the two hemispheres in the brain giving man total control over his health and inner peace. In this book we see a searching individual that walked the talk. He could heal just by sitting next to a person and describe their ills before they opened their mouths. The book is unabashed in not correcting misspellings, ( a pet peeve of mine and the only reason for four stars ) and as a result these manuscripts smack of pure authenticity. Its easy to see that Quimby felt the time had to be right to release these manuscripts, and his family withheld them until long after his death. Performing many of the same feats as Jesus with the same pure unassuming and caring heart, it is easy to see why. He wanted to finish his work and not be placed on a pedestal of any sort.So to my heading of this review. Where I first found Quimby's name was in another book found here called " The Power of Your Subconscious Mind" by Joseph Murphy. Murphy lightly touches upon his work, and he lays out in beautiful form the subjective and objective nature of man in the conscious and subconscious mind, respectively.If I could start my life over again, these two books would have been a birthday present to me at age 12. We spend so much time in the trials of understanding why life does what it does, that we lose sight of the "fact" we are the drivers of our destiny.Whatever the conscious mind tells the subconscious to do it does...no questions asked (because it can't). More on this in my review of Murphy's book.Yes, yes, buy the Quimby Manuscripts to begin to grasp understanding your mind! Then buy Murphy's!
An excellent resource to understand Mary Baker Eddy's intellectual relationship to Quimby and his thinking. Her work is original but her work brought his work to maturity, fruition, and erudition. I have used this book as a reference to write one of my books, entitled "Intellectual Evolution," also available on Amazon.
I have not read the who book as yet but many of the teaching I was already familiar with were taught to me by a Whitley Dresser whom I believe to be a relative of the author and 2nd generation Edgar Cayce student.
Incredible for those who are interested in healing as opposed to health care.
Was interesting to say the least but boring sometimes. I think it is a must-read overall.
