I am a civil war buff (why I am is a long story!) and so have read dozens of books about the civil war. Even so, there was information contained in this book which was new to me, presented in a very readable and enjoyable style. Don’t expect a deep dive into a conflict which dozens and dozens of writers have written painstakingly about. Do expect a very interestingly and pleasantly written birds-eye view of the Civil War.

I have the Kindle version. I have encountered dozens of words that do not exist or make no sense in the text. It appears that this is the result of a horrible job scanning the text into the Kindle format. It makes for unpleasant reading. I am 18% in and thinking of giving up.

Fletcher Pratt was one of those rare writers who were equally at home in both fiction and nonfiction. I previously owned a paperback copy of this book, retitled "A Short History of the Civil War". It was one of my most read histories. I literally read it to pieces. There are sadly very few historians who can breathe real life into their chosen subject matter. Bruce Catton and Shelby Foote come immediately to mind. My only fault with the kindle version are with typos and miswordings that I immediately picked up on from my reading of the paperback. A lot of the writing does seem archaic (The book was originally published in 1935.) My paperback edition dates back to the 1950s and has a forwarding chapter that mentions in brief World War 2 and the correlation to the Civil War. On the whole this is a good one book introduction to the Civil War and may whet your appetite for more of the same.

Dear Reader, My father got me this book when I was 17. I barely understood at the time what a heretical book it was; but I'll say this, it taught me how to think. More than being a "Unionist', Pratt is a humanist, he views the war as a tragedy, filled with genius, grandeur and misery, and brought to a place of potential transcendence by an adherence to republican principles by a man who was almost without ideology, Abraham Lincoln. He revisits the basic why? Because the South thought the North would not fight, or if it did, it would be a joke. The North was shocked not that so many states seceded, but that any of them did. He allows the story to unfold; the currents take you on the terrifying ride that time was. His 'takes' on the different personalities are years ahead of their time. His only miss is the nasty Sheridan, who, gutsy commander that he could be, padded his portfolio shamelessly, and I'm sure Pratt was working from his memoirs. Stone's River does stand as written. He was the first author to apply 20th Century critical mind to these 'holy' figures. I remember my father shaking his head after I'd regaled him with a few choice bits. "It's just that when I was a kid, we were taught to look at those men on a pedestal, figures to hold up as models that were above us." I then and there decided to attain those places in my own quiet way. Pratt shows you what attitudes and philosophies worked, and why. It's for us to apply those lessons to our own time. Unionist? His praise of the Southern soldier is all the more powerful for beingtersely put. For the leaders who propelled them into conflict he doesn't have much use. But Northern politicians often fare no better. He enters detail that it would take historians decades to emphasize, the genius of Adams, the US Ambassador to England, The Knights of the Golden Circle.... It hurts him that the old "infinite numbers and material" reason for Northern victory is substituted for so many examples of genius, spirit and gutsy fighting that produced victories that crowded the South away from its granaries, Kentucky and Tennessee and the machinations of the English and French Empires. Fire won the day, not some amoebic mass that smothered the REAL men. He corrects the false population tables that are still used. Lincoln's progressive handing over of power as the war aims were met is given it's proper attention. If you like this book, you MUST read his history of the Consular period of Napoleonic France, "The Empire and the Glory." Prepare to view the English reaction to a revolutionary France stabilized in a not-so-flattering light.

I've always been a military history buff, with the American Civil War being an area of particular interest. I first read this book many years ago and loved Pratt's writing style, but it is not just a blow-by-blow telling of battles and campaigns. Instead it goes to the personalities and psychologies of the leaders involved, and encapsulates them with short vignettes and sharp telling phrases. Their personalities predict their military strengths and weaknesses. Few escape his criticism… perhaps Sherman and Grant, Longstreet and some others at Gettysburg, Thomas. The politics leading up to the war, and continuing through the war, are similarly treated. Read Shelby Foote's three volumes (and you should) for more information, and of a different kind. Pratt's is a short history as the title says, often scathing, and completely delightful. I sat next to a man on an airplane once who was a member of the Civil War Roundtable. I was struck by how strongly he disliked Pratt's history when I brought it up. I think that too many of his heroes got gored.

This is probably the best short history of the Civil War. More than just reporting battles, Pratt takes us through the politics and the personalities of the time. The cultural and sociological aspects are clear and pointed. Yes, the glories and horrors of war are covered there, but so are the side shows, like the draft riots, the anti-slavery movement, the Knights of the Golden Circle, international intrigues, Lincoln's inaugurations and speeches, and the infighting in the Cabinets of both Northern and Southern presidents. A grand picture of a critical part of America's growth. Don't miss it!

This is a replacement copy of the book I read over 50 years ago. This would not be a book for Civil War buffs but it served as my excellent introduction to the Civil War. Anyone who is not familiar with Civil War history can do no better than reading this excellent study of this period. It can serve very well as a primer on the Civil War and lead to more detailed study of this period.

Excellent book.

I haven't picked up a book in a few years because works been busy. It's a pass time that I miss. "Dirt Don't Slow You Down" got me back into reading and was a great a book. I couldn't put it down. Very interesting and motivating story about a unique individual. Thanks Magnus for sharing your journey. Maybe one day I'll be able to make it to an outlaw gathering with my 912.

Inspirational story even if you are not a sports car fanatic. I really thought there would be a whole lot of Porsche talk and knowledge within. And there really is some of that within.. But that is only part of the story Magnus tells. Most of it covers his upbringing, how he became an entrepreneur and where that led him. I will definitely read this again and consider it part of my permanent book collection.

Good read! Magnus Walker has an amazing life story and is not what you think of when says he's a "Porsche Guy". Watch the video (Urban Outlaw) - read the book

As a Porsche 911 fan the book is a natural book for me to read. What surprised me was that I really enjoyed his story as much as I enjoyed the 911 stories.

After meeting Magnus Walker in person, I felt compelled to read this. It was worth every penny of the $11.45 to gain an understanding of his more personal background, as well as his tribulations, business endeavours, and successes. I bought 3 more copies to disseminate amongst my peers, and you should too.

All my friends should read this. I couldn't help but wish that it would not end ... very entertaining.Enjoyed the Urban Outlaw film also.

I have met him in person, and this book gives me a whole new perspective on Magnus and his Porsche passion! Thank you Magnus for sharing!

Magnus’ voice really comes through in the book. I couldn’t put it down. If you’re a fan of Magnus get it no questions asked

High quality guidebook with detailed information on route access, descent, equipment and (of course) the route topo. I only wish I could take-out the chapters/ areas info to take with me during the approach hike, or even to the climb (if few pages). Must have guide for the awsome high sierra climbs as well as a great book for your home library.

This guide include GPS coordinates which for some routes in the Sierra's are almost essential if you haven't been there. The descriptions are very well written and so far I have found them to be accurate. Same for the topos.

An excellent guide! small, light.

son loves it

Great Guide, very complete and covers everything you need in order to be successful climbing this area.

Good Addition, I liked the topo maps in the book of the approach!

Many of the topos and route photos are so blurry that they are illegible and useless. Do yourself a favor and buy the digital copy on the Supertopo website.I just received this from Amazon and though it was a bootlegged copy when I saw the blurry topos. After reading some of the forum posts along with messages from Chris McNamara himself, I realized that this is a legit copy. I am a big fan of Supertopos and own several of your guidebooks for different areas. However, I am very disappointed with this book in its current condition. This is not the quality that I associate with Supertopo!UPDATE: I emailed Supertopo.com and they shipped me a guidebook that's not blurry free of charge. Apparently, only the first batch printed were blurry. So be careful where you guy these books from. Best to stick to buying from Supertopo and not random vendors on Amazon.

Great guidebook (like all supertopo)

I've seen this guy's name pop up in several writings and or documentaries about WWII. Andy Rooney mentioned him in his book "My War" about Rooney's experiences as a war correspondent with the 8th Air Force. I just watched the History Channel documentary called WWII in Color for a second time and like the first time, was particularly drawn to his story. I had remembered that Stiles became a fighter pilot after completing his missions on a bomber crew and was killed in action. I hadn't remembered that he wrote a book though, so when I saw that I had to find it. Thankfully it was available for my Kindle. So the whole time I'm reading it, there's this awful truth that as the reader I posses knowledge about what will happen to him that he doesn't have at that time in his life. Because this book ends while he's still a member of a bomber crew. Another thing that's so poignant about the experience of reading this story is that Bert Stiles is just a kid. Being a 60 year old man I just kept thinking that, though he'd be 90 or so now had he lived, he didn't live and so is forever just a kid tragically lost in that war like so , many others. His story just stops in time in 1944 or 45. And he's so funny and so intelligent and sensitive it makes this book burn into your mind in a most personal way. I'm better for having read it, I know that.

A haunting memoir: amusing, ineffably sad, and brutally honest about the author's emotions.I consider this book to be the best memoir of the American air campaign in Europe during World War Two. There are other fine memoirs but this is about the gut feelings of a young B-17 pilot and were I only going to read one memoir, I would read this one.The reason? The author, First Lieutenant Bert Stiles, flew 35 bombing missions over Germany and German occupied Europe during the Spring and early Summer of 1944. After finishing his tour, he stayed in England and spent a month writing this extraordinary memoir.Everything Stiles wrote about had just happened to him in the previous six months. His memories of fear, exhaustion, of boredom, German fighters and terror, of the death of friends and the subsequent sadness beyond words, of the drone of the engines on a B-17 and of how good a candy bar tasted after they were out of enemy territory; all of these memories were painfully fresh when he set them down. And their effects on him were also fresh. He wrote about the time he came back from a mission during which he had seen at least a dozen B-17s from his Wing go down.“...all those guys...all those good guys...shot to hell...or captured...then I came apart and cried like a little kid...”This memoir has many virtues one of the most striking being that Stiles was a fine writer, a keen observer of human nature, and an extraordinary man with such a broad view of life that some of his observations seem out of place in not only one so young but in such a time as 1944.Stiles was actually a pacifist but like many came to the conclusion that the Nazis threatened the entire concept of Western Civilization. This is a haunting memoir: amusing, ineffably sad, and brutally honest about the author's emotions. At one point he was taking off active operations because he had become "flak happy." That was the expression used in the day by the US Army Air Force for someone cracking-up from the stress. From Serenade to the Big Bird:"There are all kinds of people: senators and whores and barristers and bankers and dishwashers. There are Chinamen and Cockney’s and Gypsies and Negroes. There are Lesbians and cornhuskers and longshoremen. There are poets and lieutenants and shortstops and prime ministers. There are Yanks and Japs and poor whites...there are Germans and Melanesians and beggars and Holy Rollers...there are people. And some day we are going to catch on, that no matter where people are born, or how their eyes slant, or what their blood type, they are just people...They are not masses. They will not go on being slaves. They are just people, partly good, partly bad, mostly balancing out. And until we call them people, and know they are people, all of them, we are going to have a sick world on our hands."I consider this book to be the best memoir of the American air campaign in Europe during World War Two. They will not go on being slaves. They are just people, partly good, partly bad, mostly balancing out. And until we call them people, and know they are people, all of them, we are going to have a sick world on our hands."Bert Stiles had written a number of published articles and short stories before he wrote this memoir. He wanted to be a writer when the war was over. But that wasn’t to be. After completing his 35 missions in bombers, he could have gone back to the US as a flight instructor. Instead he volunteered to fly fighters which he did until he was killed in action on 26 November 1944 in a dogfight over Germany.Stiles never saw his memoir published. He easily would have been one of the finest writers of his generation. Of the millions of small tragedies of World War Two and a lesson in how war kills men, and now women, indiscriminately.

If Catcher in the Rye had been published ten years earlier, this could have been its sequel: Holden Goes to War, but without the humorous elements. It is an interesting read, but more because it allows one to experience the angst of a young man as he serves in air combat rather than any historical content. Much of this book is reflection on personal relationships and experiences. It seems to have been written as a stream of consciousness moving from one thought to the next against the background of bombing misions over Europe in 1944.It should be noted that the author, having completed his tour with B 17 bombers, transferred to fighter aircraft as he had initially wished. He was killed in air combat late in the war. Had I not been familiar with that fact, I do not know that I would have read this book.Be aware that in this Kindle edition, there are text errors; there is an annoying frequency of dropped words at the end of lines and paragraphs.

Any eye witness accounts of how these air force personnel made it through their missions and lives are valuable, and a worthwhile reminder of their sacrifices. This book has the virtue of immediacy: Bert Stiles apparently wrote it in a months' time while on leave between postings. Tragically, he died in air combat not long after, and his mother discovered the draft in his personal effects. Its rich in authenticity: its not polished like a "finished" memoir; it's also fairly discursive. So it gives a candid, 3-dimensional look at how a young airmen lived the totality of his life as a warrior, lover, late adolescent and an (unintentional) tourist in the UK. Its format mixes up descriptions of air activity, life on base, interactions with people here at home, and the author's own musings on a variety of subjects that came to mind. All this also means it needs a bit of forbearance. Had Stiles actually survived WWII and intended to publish this book, it undoubtedly would have assumed a slightly different form, and with different emphases. And he might have thought twice about the literary value of including some of his on-the-spot musings, which occasionally slow down the book and detract from its appeal.Even so, I learned things about these B-17 missions that I had not picked up elsewhere. When I try to put myself in their shoes, fear grips my heart like steel. I can only dimly imagine what it was like to endure this, and these types of books make us face it on their own terms.

A book that provides basic cultural and historical background on the great country of Mongolia. I especially enjoyed the objectivity and the attention paid by the author to the negative impact of Russian and Mongolian totalitarian communist regimes. Very similar to what happened in parts of East Europe with effects that last till today.

I purchased this book for a family member who will be traveling to Mongolia in the near future. He liked it for the same reasons that I did: it is compact, lightweight, and can be easily carried on the trip, yet provides a great overview of multiple aspects of the country and culture. He is an experienced traveler, so I can use his pleased reaction as a recommendation. I'd like to give it 5 stars, but since I skimmed his copy, I'll have to give it 4 stars for now.

Great book for my upcoming travel

Not a guide book, but a wonderful resource for background about the Mongolian people, their history and culture.

compact and full of helpful information

This little book has a great deal of information in it, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.I would definitely buy this again.

good information

Wanted it for travel but not really helpful for that at all. Just really a review of Mongolia history and culture. It does not help me plan my stay there.

Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander), by Diana Gabaldon

From Library Journal

This time-traveling romantic adventure will please fans who have been waiting for the further adventures of Dr. Claire Beauchamp Randall, a 20th-century American who goes to Scotland in search of her 18th-century husband, virile Scot Jamie Fraser, whom she met and married in Outlander ( LJ 7/91). Book 2 of a planned trilogy takes readers along on Randall's quest, as she hopes to find a state or time (like that of the title's dragonfly suspended in a piece of amber) where Fraser still exists. This imaginative novel suffers somewhat from the author's overuse of personification ("spectacles gleaming with concern and curiosity") and her confusing switches between the two first-person narrations, which sometimes cloud an otherwise intriguing adventure. But Outlander 's readers will still devour this hefty volume without complaint.-Marlene Lee, Drain Branch Lib., Ore.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews

An engaging time-travel romance, the second of a trilogy (after Outlander, 1991), that animates the people and politics of a pivotal period in history--while turning up the heat between an appealing modern heroine and a magnetic romantic hero. It's now 1968, and Claire Beauchamp Randall has returned to Inverness, Scotland, with her daughter, Brianna. This is Claire's first visit back since she and husband Frank visited 22 years before--when she walked through a Druid stone circle into the middle of the 18th century. Now, Frank is dead, and Claire hopes to learn what happened to the second great love of her life--gallant Jamie Fraser, laird of Lallybroch whom she married during her journey into the past. She's also looking for a way to tell Brianna who her real father is. Framed by these dilemmas, the bulk of the story consists of the second installment of Claire and Jamie's adventures. Escaping the English death sentence passed against Jamie, they flee to prerevolutionary Paris, where they secretly work at foiling Bonnie Prince Charlie's efforts to regain the Scottish throne. But this espionage is only the beginning...A most entertaining mix of history and fantasy whose author, like its heroine, exhibits a winning combination of vivid imagination and good common sense. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. I am a victim of Outlander addiction, both the TV show and the books. I'm mystified about what it is that is so compelling about these huge tomes but never in my fairly long life have novels grabbed me so intensely. This is the second of 8 published so far. It's a wonderful, densely detailed, imaginative story with epic characters. At times it rambles and is overly wordy but it's important to read every line because you never know what's going to crop up in the next book. The language is so rich that sometimes I have to take a few days break from the linguistic decadence. Gabaldon is truly a force of nature...an inspired writing machine. I fell down this rabbit hole in January, have read 5 of the 8 books and have already read the first two twice. Warning: these books are addictive. You could be entering a world beyond your control!

FINAL DECISION: I ended up liking this one better than OUTLANDER itself. The story seemed tighter, the relationship between Claire and Jamie more complex and although there is plenty of death and pain in this book, it felt more civilized after the events of the first book. And I ended up in tears for most of the end of this book.THE STORY: After the events of OUTLANDER, Jaime and Claire have fled to France. There they will try to prevent the coming battle of Culloden in order to prevent the destruction of the Highlanders culture. Their scheme requires them to participate in Eighteenth Century French court politics and intrigues with Bonnie Prince Charlie and the King of France. There are still repercussions from Jamie's torture and rape at the end of OUTLANDER. Intrigues, danger and the past threaten to tear Jamie and Claire apart even at the point where they share joy at the coming of their child.OPINION: I liked OUTLANDER, but I liked DRAGONFLY IN AMBER more. OUTLANDER was about Jamie and Claire discovering one another and falling in love. This book is about letting their love and marriage mature. In OUTLANDER Jamie and Claire ran the gauntlet of danger. This book is a slow burn. Things are quieter, more outwardly civilized and yet even more complicated and dangerous. Politics, society and intrigue take up the majority of this book. For those readers who read OUTLANDER but don't know more about the series, they will be surprised by the beginning of this book. (I don't want to give it away, but it is a clever story device to begin the narrative there instead of being strictly chronological). The book feels fresh and different after OUTLANDER. The characters have grown and changed (not always for the good) and there are lots of new characters to get to know. Old friends and enemies also have returned so there is a good reason to review the events of OUTLANDER if you haven't read it in a while.Jamie is more remote in this book after the events with Jack Randall in OUTLANDER. He is still struggling with the aftermath and the pressures of trying to save the entire Highlands. Being involved in the political intrigue means that he and Claire spend less time together and thus immense pressure is placed on their relationship.Claire is also struggling to find her role in this new situation. The new life in the Court of France has new conflicts and restrictions upon this twentieth century woman. She has to use her imperfect knowledge of the past to help avoid Culloden while know knowing whether such a thing is possible. She is also struggling with her relationship with Jamie. She gave up her entire life to be with him and now she has to deal with those consequences. On a more philosophical point, the book also investigates the idea of changing the past. Is it even possible for Jamie and Claire to change the events that lead to Culloden or does everything they do actually cause that event to happen? Can the past be changed at all? These are universal themes in time travel stories and this book examines those issues with complexity and subtlety. Even better, there are no real answers.I began reading OUTLANDER when the television series started because I always want to read the books first and I began reading this one in preparation for Season 2. I don't know if I have been influenced by the series, but I felt that this book went more quickly and the events were clearer, the characters more defined and the outcome more devastating. I cried through the end of the book because it was incredibly well written and sad. At the end of this book, I desperately wanted to begin VOYAGER (book 3) to find out what happens.WORTH MENTIONING: This book ends on a cliffhanger.CONNECTED BOOKS: DRAGONFLY IN AMBER is the second book in the Outlander series. It can be read as a standalone, but why do that. Read OUTLANDER first to really appreciate DRAGONFLY IN AMBER.STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Just be forewarned that once you start this series, you can't stop. But wait, this is a review for book 2 so you probably already know that! In fact, you're probably not even wasting precious time to read any of these reviews and are already glued to this 2nd book. Why am I wasting precious time writing this review when book 3 is impatiently waiting?! I don't know!!! **panic starts to creep in** If you're reading the Kindle version, I'd highly recommend purchasing the Audible companion as well so you can switch back and forth and maximize your time wrapped up in this beautifully woven story. One word of advice though, if you get the Audible version and listen to it through your car stereo while driving, don't do what I did.... Don't be so engrossed in the story that you forget your windows are down at a red light, in dense traffic, with plenty of others with their windows down, while the book is at one of the steamy scenes between Jamie and Claire, and you're sitting there behind the wheel, alone in your car, smiling like a fool, 😏 blissfully unaware of all the stares until you're jolted out of your reverie by all the honking.

Just as fantastic as the first in the series. It helps that the Starz show also keeps pretty true to the novels with a few minor exceptions. While rich in description and language, the book is an easy read which is useful at nearly a thousand pages. With Diana Gabaldon's series you get your fix of romance, as well as fantastic historical and war fiction, science and medicine, travel, a bit of sci-fi, as well as a great dose of feminism with Claire's role(s). The author really mixes all these literary genres quite well into one remarkable series that is hard to detach from. At times you find yourself frustrated with how many pickles these characters find themselves in on a regular basis, but that's why it's fiction. Just go with it and enjoy.

Not sure if some of these negative reviews I've read are by real or paid debunkers. The story is quite good and I have been noticing things in the books that never made it on-screen in the Starz adaptation. That's a plus for me as I didn't start reading them until after watching the first two seasons of the show. I am working on Voyager now, but decided to leave my review on DOA when I saw all the naysayers, some of whom sound like they didn't even read the whole book. It amazes me that people do that, if you don't have anything nice to say...some readers don't have the stamina to read a big series or appreciate that there are ebbs and flows, as the story builds. No one's life is non-stop action. I liked the book, while it's presented a little differently than the show timeline, the differences made me want to really read it rather than skim things I'd already watched. Can't wait to keep working through them all.
