I never thought my issue with a book would be that it is written too well, but that is the case here. From the beginning, Poppy Z. Brite sets ups two twisted, sick men, and makes it noted to the reader that they have no limits in how far they will go to feed their desires. She also makes it noted that she will not be an author to shy away from describing said acts in the most descriptive ways possible. Brite manages to know just the write words to use and the order to make even the most mundane acts of sex or violence come across as the most brutal and disturbing ideas to grace paper. Scenes are so anatomically correct and described, it made me walk away from the book at times, questioning if the author had actually done some of these things herself.Along with being violent, both killers, but Andrew in particular, and written to be intelligent and thoughtful, a deadly combo. There were many times in Andrew's chapters that I wanted to have the man, but was so amazed by how thought out and intelligent his plans were, that I wouldn't help but be amazed by him. I want him to die for his crimes, but I want him to live longer to see more of this man's intelligent. It surprised me.So basically, I like the book for the fact that the killers are intelligent, rather than just fueled by the craving to murder. I dislike the book for the high amount of sexual content. I understand some of the sex scenes, but some seem like they are just there for the author to write smut. The double-edged sword of the book is the author's ability to describe the story and scenes, which is good in the parts of describing characters and scenery, but bad as it can be so well done in scenes, that it becomes disgusting.I would recommend this book, but give a warning that the amount of violence and homoerotic content are both very high, and explicit. If you are unsure about either of these, I would refrain from reading this book, and find another serial killer novel instead.

I used to buy multiple copies of this book and keep them on my shelf for the sole purpose of giving them to friends and acquaintances, telling them "You should read this book". I wanted to see if they ,too, would experience what I did, which was to become utterly and irrevocably fascinated with the appalling beauty of this book. I had been a fan of Poppy Z. Brite's work for a while but Exquisite Corpse was and remains her best work. The novel is about two serial killers, operating on different prey, who inevitably cross paths and form a--I hesitate to use the word "romantic"--perhaps we should call it a "Necromantic Relationship". The subject matter is a sublime gore-fest. There are scenes of such unabashed violence and carnal destruction that it's almost a Feast of Death. But what sets this book apart from other splatter punk works is the beauty of Brite's language. I don't think I've ever seen such beautiful descriptions of graphic violence, of sexual terror, of human dissection, of blood...the prose is a heady mixture of poetry and clinical facts. At one point when a dead man is cut open...the horror of his disease-riddled innards and entrails is a veritable banquet of succulent and devastating power to the killers who performed the act.For those who feel that this matters: the (necro)romantic relationships in this book are primarily homosexual in nature. So if this offends you, then best go elsewhere. Actually, I think this may have been intended by the author. For she seems intent of supplying an endless variety of things that most conventional readers would find offensive--human cannibalism, homosexual serial killers, insane violence and intense graphic sex and violence. She seems to want to put the reader through the meat grinder and see what comes out on the other side. And so what you have is a book that is gleefully perverted, resolute in breaking taboos, and perhaps one of the most wonderfully sexually explicitly novels in the genre. It's a book that will divide its readers between extremes of Love and Hate. There will be no in-betweens here.My only complaint with this book, is that the ending feels altogether rushed and unsatisfying. It's as if Brite simply didn't know where to go or how to end her macabre masterpiece and so just gave up. I don't blame her, really. I had no idea where the story would go, either. But despite the flawed ending, the book itself is an incredibly powerful work of horror and deserves to be experienced.

When I closed this book after finishing it, I sat staring at the cover for a solid five minutes while my brain finished whirling. It’s definitely not a story for the faint of heart; it’s dark, graphic and at times disturbing. But this is exactly what I enjoy.I feel as though some point of views in it were unneeded, and I had hoped for things to progress a little faster than they did. But it kept me engaged and turning pages, and when I was done it left me both satisfied and wanting more.

This story is sick and perverse and all sorts of wrong yet, like a horrible car wreck, I could not look away from the mangled mess.EXQUISITE CORPSE is told by multiple POV's, including that of killers Jay and Andrew, as well as the androgynous Vietnamese-American runaway, Tran, and his AIDS infected ex-lover, Luke, in the perfect crime/drug-infested backdrop of New Orleans. Eventually the lives of each ill-fated character come together in a bloody conclusion and, well... you'll have to read to find out who survives and who doesn't. I'll just say it went a completely different way than I was hoping it would, but I was still satisfied with how it ended. Though, perhaps, I would have liked more from the epilogue.I don't want to spoil too much about the plot (the description pretty much sums it up for you), but words cannot express how much I enjoyed this well told, albeit twisted homoerotic tale of love and murder. I rather like dark, taboo subject matters and I got it here in spades. This is the first book I've read by Poppy Z Brite but it will certainly not be my last. Color me disturbed yet mightily impressed by the writer's wickedly salacious prose."I did not know what Jay was, not yet; but on some instinctual, almost biological level I *recognized* him. I knew then that this man was infinitely dangerous to me. I also knew that I had to go as deep inside him as he would let me."
