Mythology, by Edith Hamilton

Amazon.com Review

Edith Hamilton loved the ancient Western myths with a passion--and this classic compendium is her tribute. "The tales of Greek mythology do not throw any clear light upon what early mankind was like," Hamilton explains in her introduction. "They do throw an abundance of light upon what early Greeks were like--a matter, it would seem, of more importance to us, who are their descendents intellectually, artistically, and politically. Nothing we learn about them is alien to ourselves." Fans of Greek mythology will find all the great stories and characters here--Perseus, Hercules, and Odysseus--each discussed in generous detail by the voice of an impressively knowledgeable and engaging (with occasional lapses) narrator. This is also an excellent primer for middle- and high-school students who are studying ancient Greek and Roman culture and literature. --Gail Hudson

Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY, originally published in 1942, is one of two classic mythological summaries most readily available to us today. The other (and older of the two) is by Thomas Bulfinch; it was published in the early 19th century and is commonly called BULFINCH'S MYTHOLOGY (a merger of three works originally published separately as THE AGE OF FABLE, THE AGE OF CHIVALRY, and LEGENDS OF CHARLEMAGNE). Both authors present a summary overview of myths once widely taught but now generally neglected. Bulfinch is much more extensive and includes numerous legends not covered by Hamilton, but the coverage by both of the Greek and Roman myths (for which the two authors are most famous) makes for particularly interesting comparison. Some prefer Hamilton's treatment; others prefer Bulfinch's. I personally prefer Hamilton's consistent use of distinct Greek and Roman names rather than Bulfinch's frequent and occasionally confusing use of Roman names to identify Greek entities. But I generally enjoy Bulfinch's slightly old-fashioned style of storytelling over Hamilton's (though, all things considered, hers is quite fine). Hamilton's work is still under copyright, and it is published only by Little, Brown. Thus, it is more expensive than Bulfinch's which, being in the public domain, is easily obtainable online for free or in very inexpensive editions by numerous ebook publishers. Those who may own older paperback or hardcovered editions of Hamilton's work will discover the 2012 ebook replaces the magnificent artwork of Steele Savage with somewhat less majestic illustrations by Chris Wormell (though the list of illustration topics remains the same). The text remains unaltered, and the formatting is exquisite. There is an active TOC (here at the very end), but (disappointingly) no index in the ebook version. Overall, it is a very handsome ebook and a delight to read.It is hard to imagine retelling the great myths in a manner more concisely informative than rendered here by Hamilton. Critical reviewers who claim she is too difficult or too dry are certainly entitled to their opinions, but given the nature of the material and the purpose of this book, I would respectfully disagree with them. There is, of course, no substitute for reading the full-length originals from which these great tales have been culled and summarized, but this is by far a much more convenient way to initially encounter them; that is why this book has been (or, at least, once was) heavily used in public schools in conjunction with teaching these timeless stories.Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY belongs in the personal library of every literate person as an introduction to, summary of, and/or reminder of these Greek, Roman, and Norse myths. But for added insights and additional myths, I would encourage readers of it to also obtain and read BULFINCH'S MYTHOLOGY.

I have to say, I'm disappointed I didn't discover Edith Hamilton sooner. I loved every moment of this book. It focuses mainly on Greek mythology, although there is a brief section on Norse mythology at the end. I appreciate that she lists her sources for each story at the beginning of the chapter and her telling of the these myths are easily read, but not over simplified and the result is highly enjoyable.

In grammar school I studied Greek mythology, and was mesmerized by the Odyssey and the Iliad. Soon other subjects came along that stole my attention. Fast-forward fifty years and I found myself curious to see if my old fascination and excitement about Greek mythology could be rekindled, and I once again I started slowly and tucked into Edith Hamilton's Mythology. I found this book to be as alive and vibrant as I remembered, but I'm thrilled to say that as an adult I appreciate it even more. It's mind-boggling that having been published in 1942, this is still one of the best interpretations around. One thing I hadn't remembered is that Ms. Hamilton's Mythology includes sections on Roman and Norse stories; I had no interest in them when I was younger and only middling interest in them now, but they're a happy find. This book stokes the imagination and invites further study of the subject. I bought the Kindle ebook and Kindle audiobook versions; both are outstanding. I wish I could give this more than 5 stars!

This 75th Anniversary Edition does not disappoint. My introduction to mythology happened more than 50 years ago when my librarian Aunt Louise gave me The Golden Treasury of Myths and Legends by Anne Terry White and Alice and Martin Provensen (a classic itself). I moved on to an early 60s edition of Edith Hamilton's Mythology, entranced with the family trees of the gods and using her description of the Underworld to make a model when I took Latin. Also became a fan of the D'Aulaires' mythology books. My interest and background in mythology have served me well as an English major, grad student, parent, school librarian, and lifelong heavy reader. Now retired, I'm taking a class at our Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at North Carolina State University on mythology. I decided I needed to upgrade my old favorite. The 75th Anniversary edition is beautifully designed, a pleasure to read and hold. Illustrations include plates, page drawings, design motifs, and borders. Anyone with a longstanding or brand-new interest in Greek mythology will be dazzled. Highly recommended.

Classic text that was required reading in High School. Loved it then, but sadly I plastered my paperback with the names of girls I was dating at the time. The Kindle version is perfect - different illustrations than the book (I also have the hardcover) but just as good. Hamilton's prose style is borderline "quaint" but adds a nice personal touch. The lack of commas in places may require a couple reads of some sentences. Even so I highly recommend Mythology as it covers both Greek, Roman, along with teaser Norse mythology.

I have always loved Greek and Roman mythology, and have bought so many different books over the years trying to find a comprehensive, easy to read, well formatted version of the myths. This is by far the best collection that I have found yet. All previous collections have left me feeling disappointed. This is not a strict translation of the myths, but is a retelling of them in easy to read modern language. This collection is easy to read, covers all of the majors Greek and Roman myths, and is very logically laid out. I highly recommend.

I have all of the Taormina's books and this is one is okay, but it is not her best. I also own Swim Speed workouts. Too much of this book is spent underscoring why the reader should be focusing on the high elbow and less time really illustrating the drills to perfect it. Swim Speed Strokes is a great book because she provides great images to illustrate the technique along with the why... So my guess is that was intentional because that is exactly what you get in Swim Speed Workouts. The point is that buy both Swim Speed Workouts and Swim Speed Secrets.. If you are only going to buy one.. then Swim Speed Workouts is the better buy.

I am a 51 year old Master's Swimmer. I swam competitively in the 70's and 80's and then took about 30 years off swimming. Back in the 80's we learned the "S" pull; when I came back to swimming 7-8 years ago I found things had changed and now it was all about "early vertical forearm". I tried really hard for years to modify my stroke but could never get it. In the meantime I was getting very frustrated as my swimming seemed to be getting worse despite my efforts. My daughter's swim coach recommended this book. I read it cover to cover a number of times. I found some of the stuff in the beginning a bit hard to follow - but the pictures are really great. (especially if you are a visual person). I worked on the principles hard and tried to incorporate some of the recommended drills but not every day (hard since I swim with a team). It took about 6 months but all of a sudden one day it just clicked and the results were stunning. Once I got the catch right, I immediately dropped 3-4 seconds per 100 with less effort. Seriously. Overnight. When does that ever happen? Its gotten me so energized and excited about swimming again that I've entered my first meet in 2 years. So, in summary great book and I highly recommend it ! Have patience as it may take some time but once you get it right the results are dramatic.

I am a back of the pack triathlete and picked up this book to help with my swim times based on Amazon reviews. I had been doing various total immersion drills over a few years, but have always been a slow swimmer. I just read this book yesterday and went swimming today. My 100 meter time went down 15 secs without even doing any of the drills yet, just by focusing on "feeling the water"! (mind you, I'm still over 2 minutes per 100) Also, my chronically sore shoulder felt great after my swim, using the stroke adjustments recommended in this book. I'm very excited to follow Sheila's plan to build up strength and continue to improve. I found the book an enjoyable read and very clear. Can't wait for my next race!

I have been stuck at 2:00/100m. (Don't laugh there are plenty of us out there.) It didn't matter what I did and to be honest I don't have the time to see a coach on a coaches' schedule. After reading all of the things I am messed up on, haha, I got it. The light bulb went off and I went back to real basics, floating, sculling then working stroke. I an now down to 1:45 and getting faster. I will never be the fastest, but I am no longer at the back of the pack. Movin' up!!

I have read several different books/systems to improve my swimming. I pick and chose from each. I learned more about the importance of the "catch" , tempo and several helpful drills. This information was not in the other books. Probably could have taught the techniques with fewer words, but an enjoyable and valuable read.

I’m still trying to learn all the ins and outs of the freestyle stroke and found this book helpful. It explained the catch in better, easier to understand terminology than I’ve found anywhere else. I liked the numbers for guidelines on items like DPS and stroke rate that I plan on using to review my progress. Only wish this book would have some full workout programs in it instead of a list of drills.

This is my very first book about swimming technique. So I never had idea what kind of information (technique) I can get from this book...I was shocked about such a explanation of mechanical movement in the water!! This book gave me a lot of new insight and technique to improve my swimming. I strongly recommend to beginners, but even master swimmers, too.

I'm beating a dead horse here a little bit with the fourteenth consecutive five-star review, but it has to be said - this book is about as good a swim instruction book as it gets. A coach would be better, of course, but beyond that, this book teaches you how to swim freestyle like the pros do.I literally read this book in one sitting from beginning to end (there's a lot of pictures), and the next time I got in the water, I could swim faster and longer than ever before. The high-elbow catch technique is tiring at first, but it allows you far more strokes in a given time period, and really engages your entire body more than when your elbow sinks. My lats were on fire after a 1000-yard workout. It's hard to say all that much about the actual contents of the book. It teaches the high-elbow crawl stroke, and that's it. It has a few drills, but it's all stuff you've probably heard of before (catch-up, sculling, etc.). But unless you have a swim coach who's already taught you how to swim the perfect freestyle stroke, this book is a must-read.

The five stars are for the original translation titled "The Waning of the Middle Ages," first published in 1949. Amazon doesn't (and should) have a separate listing for "The Autumn of the Middle Ages," a 1996 translation that is drastically different from "The Waning." The original translation ("The Waning") was done with the author Johan Huizinga's participation and is superb. It is fluent, poetic and probably transposes most of the highly acclaimed aesthetic qualities that Huizinga's writing is known for. On the other hand, "The Autumn" (done by two Western Washington University professors and published in 1996) is flat, boring, and reads like a bad tranlation homework assignment.I thought they were the same book when I ordered from Amazon -- there was no information to indicate otherwise. I only realized that "The Autumn of the Middle Ages" was a completely different version after I read the introduction. And a few pages into the main text, I simply couldn't continue. The translators might think they were doing their students a favor by bringing in a newer, fuller translation, but no amount of good intention can compensate for dullness. On the second try I correctly ordered the "The Waning of the Middle Ages" and instantly understand why it is a classic when I started reading it. So whoever made the same mistake as I did the first time, don't give up. Get "The Waning" instead and you will love it.

My problem with this book is the same that has been expressed by a couple other reviewers: to wit, does Huizinga really know what was going through the hearts and minds of the people in the particular era and region with which the book deals, as the author and his proselytes claim? My answer is, in a word,-No. No book can. History is an elusive subject under the best of circumstances.Let me cut to the chase. Huizinga is really not so much interested in demarking the Middle Ages from the Renaissance. After one gets into the thick of things, it becomes quite obvious that what he's actually about is contrasting the Middle Ages (as he understands or imagines them) from his own historical milieu. I won't belabor the point: one citation will suffice. On page 235, Huizinga asseverates that, "There was no great truth of which the medieval mind was more certain than those words from the Corinthians, 'For now we see through a glass darkly; but then face to face.' They never forgot that everything would be absurd if it exhausted its meaning in its immediate function and form of manifestation, and that all things extend in an mportant way to the world beyond." How does he know? Did he conduct extensive interviews with illiterate serfs whose life expectancy was a fraction of ours and spent almost all their waking hours trying to put food in their bellies? - No, the worldview Huizinga describes above is one common to mystics and poets of all eras and climes. His very citation of the Corinthians subverts any notion that it was exclusive to the Netherlands in the Middle Ages.Huizinga was essentially an artistic and poetic writer, and the insights one comes away with from his book are such as one might expect from one so gifted: textured and fascinating portraits of a time now lost. But they are just that, verbal pictures, calling to mind not so much Breughel or any of the other artists whose works are Plated in the middle of the book, but that of the Pre-Raphaelites.This is an enchanting book and well worth the read. It's just that you may have to hang your critic's hat upon a medieval peg before sitting down to enjoy it. I trust you have one...a medieval peg that is.

As being Dutch, it pleases me that a Dutch historian brought forward such an impressive and longlasting work. For years my teacher in medieval history already pushed me to read this book and to take notice of this. This was later on once again confirmed by Renaissance Philosophy, Cultural History and historical theory professors and countless referenced in other books that keep on refering back to Huizinga (perhaps cos I studied as the same university as the one where Huizinga used to teach). As we'll known, it's the only Dutch book that is ever nominated for the Nobel prize for literature, so that should say pretty much about the way this book is written. It however takes you a while to get really into it, cos it reads not always equally easy..Easy or not, it does stand out as a remarkable piece of historywriting as it does has an elloquence I have only seen a few times before (Gibbon comes in mind) The choice of words, the way sentences are constructed and the way they almost float through the pages is really amazing. Once again, this can be seen as benefitial, but also as a negative point, cos the writer tends to describe his thoughts with detours and lots of words. But as I asume this book is mainly still read by historians we shoulkd not complain cos we have read far more complicated stuff. I thought it was a delight....and would like to read more of the master...too bad for most that 95% of his work is never translated into another language....Thank god I can read Dutch. Now something about the content...The book does indeed mainly seem to respond on Burckhardt (although never directly refering to it) and all others that had stated that a clear line can be drawn between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It really shows very nicely that this is a much more complex and difficult matter. It shows very we'll how in alot of ways the people of the Renaissance still strived for the same goals, ideals and percieved the same dreams. On the other side it also shows how deeply religious the life of the Medieval Europeans was and more important, why this was the case..how they were confronted and reminded constantly to the importance of their faith in every possible way. In this I think it does take a very different stance than most other books I read about the Renaissance.First because of the change of focus. Huizinga mainly studied the Netherlands and France, while others focus on mainly Italy, like Baron, Burckhardt and so on. Now, 90 years later it's still surprisingly difficult to find a good book about the Renaissance in the north of Europe, which indeed was very different and possible was founded on really different sources, thoughts and changes. Let is remind that in Italy the past was very much alive, even in the darkest moments of the Middle Ages...simply because what the romans left behind. Churches, monuments and so on. The Italians were never far away from their glorious past. In Northern Europe, there wasn't such a past, not to mention what barbarians had left behind. And yet, Hummanist scholarship and the changes in also fount their ways here. And eventually, it was here where the Renaissance struck the hardest by inflicting one of the greatest and most devastating changes in Christian/European history....the reformation. And..moreover..the gretest classical scholar and hummanist, was also a Northern Eurean..namely Erasmus.Now..Huizinga is not focussing on this..and indeed does study that what can be called Bourgondy on it's own, the sources used are mainly from that erea and he doesn't really wave out alot to Italy or make reference to how it was elsewhere. What in that comes clearly visible is that it indeed was a time of deeply religious people, but moreover also a time of cultural grow, development and high conjuncture. In this we can only come to the conclusion that the Renaissance is not only something that happened in Italy, but simultaniously in different places over Europe, it was a time of cultural growth..............After all the fallbacks Europe finally began to climb back on his feet......

It may repeat somethings but each problem has a new way of looking at the issure of repairing the laptop. It is good if you do not understand it the first time and has a good map to follow the break down of step to find the problem. I deals mostly with HP laptops but the problems are the same no matter what computer it is. They all hsve the same standard part in them but with different part numbers. I enjoyed it and know more about then now when looking or going to repair it. to look at what part to test.

fantastic, this guy knows his s---t. well made, the cream of the cream in fixing ,talks from experience ,buy it,or be sorry

Easy to read and understand with a lot of pictures and information covering many Laptops and how to take care of and enjoy having them.

This book was neither easy to read nor particularly informative -- well, it might have been, had it been written in English. The translation was abominable; as soon as I seemed to be getting the gist of a description the poor translation got in the way. I also didn't find the illustrations, such as there were, to be at all useful. I am no novice to PC repair and upgrading; I've built about 50 machines over the past twenty years and have done all facets of hardware and software repair and upgrading(from DOS through Windows 8, and a even a few versions of Linux, running on everything from 286 machines through the latest offerings from Intel and AMD). I have had less experience with laptops, although I have done basic upgrades and even replaced one motherboard. I don't mind doing internet research, but I'm old-fashioned enough to like to have a good hard copy reference book -- THIS WASN'T IT!
