** Minor spoiler alert ** Jaye L. Knight has done a fantastic job with her 5th book in the series! Although not my absolute favorite in the Ilyon Chronicles...(some unexpected sadness occurs, *tears*), this book was exceptional! It was beautiful to see her weave Biblical truths through the story without it being preachy or pushy. I wasn't too surprised by the ending...Everyone has been expecting it, although I got a little worried there at one point! :)I think my only disappointment was that Kyrin wasn't in the story as much as she has been in the other books.14+ There was some violence, but nothing is explained in detail.I can't wait for her next book in the series! Everyone, you have to grab a copy...just make sure you read the ones that come before it! ;)...I received this book free from the author for promotional purposes. No reviews, positive or otherwise, were required. All opinions expressed are purely my own...
This series is so inspiring! Bitter Winter contained everything I love about Jaye's work. Trust, love, redemption, joy and truth are all themes that are depicted brilliantly. One of the things I love most about the series is how relatable the world, characters, and emotions are. Characters are put in difficult situations where sometimes painful things happen. Still, the last chapter leaves one hopeful and happy. If not in intense suspense for the next in the series. These books are done amazingly well. If you haven't already read (and reread) the first books and short novels in the series, do so!I received a free copy of the book before release by the author in exchange for my honest review.Still, I bought a copy to have in my collection.
Age Appropriate For: 15 and up for violence and romanceBest for Ages: 15 and upIt’s taken me a long time to write this review, not because I haven’t wanted to, but because life has been busy. This book was one of my favorite books this year.So many books today campout on either a Hallmark version of the world (very nice and happy, but not realistic) or the dark, dirty side of life (which gets very depressing very fast).I think the reason that these books mean so much to me is they are so true to life while being a good escape. the joy and pain are all mixed up, sometimes God intervenes in incredible ways and sometimes tragedy happens. This story builds on everything that has happened in the books that came before. The winter is horrible, everyone is struggling to find warmth and enough food. The resistance faces both some wonderful gains and tragedy. The hard thing a series like this is that to really give a full blown review, I’d have to give spoilers to someone who hasn’t read the previous books. So let me give you just the bullet points.~ The characters are growing and changing (those that aren’t dead)~ The romance in this book was sweet. A couple mentions of being excited about enjoying the privileges of marriage but it was done in a realistic, yet not dirty way. The fact is mentioned then life goes on.~ Your heart will break when tragedy strikes. I nearly cried myself.~ Your heart will soar as hope rises out of the ashes.~ While an allegory, it will put in mind so many things that the Bible talks about.~ This book does have a satisfying ending.I highly recommend this book to those who like this series, non-magical fantasy, and stories with a realistic mix of hardship and hope.
Winter is not the time to fight wars. Especially winters when game is scarce, the weather bitter, and sickness hovers in the air. Though food supplies are short, Jace, Kyrin, and their friends believe they are safely tucked away from Davira’s wrath in their hidden camps for the winter. But things take a turn for the worst when they are attacked, and sickness follows rapidly on the heels of the attack. The characters I have come to know and care about through the last four books are all here. I feel like I know them personally and the heartache that flows off the pages of this book seemed overwhelming. Jaye L. Knight does it again. She drew me into a story that moved rapidly (I finished this in two days). Another exciting story in an exciting series. Now I must wait for the next book. (That’s what happens when I read too fast!) But I will wait and look forward to getting the next book when it comes out.
This book is so BEAUTIFUL!!! That cover is amazing. And a cover featuring Tyra?? How cool is that??It's always fun to be thrown back into the world with Jace and Kyrin and all of their peoples. I didn't get as sucked into this book like I did with the others. However, I really loved the character growth we got to see in Jace, and the last chapter was perfection. Can't wait for the next book!!!
What an interesting choice to change the type of conflict that the characters face. The author bravely chose to present us with a different kind of dilemma. Admittedly, I was concerned it was moving too slow a couple of times, but not enough to disappoint. I really enjoyed this book like all of the others in the series. I am looking forward to the conclusion.
For most of the book, it seemed like the characters were going through one miserable situation after another with little if any relief. One happy moment at the very end didn't really make up for it and this is NOT the last book in the series.
This was a really good book. The storyline is a bit different from Knight’s other novels, and the book also seems shorter, but the writing is as good as ever, and there are several unexpected twists. What I enjoyed most was the moral of the story: your faith is more important than anything, even those you love most. Great job, Jaye. Looking forward to the last book!
